The simple answer is this question is that in I currently pay $2.93 per therm in White Plains, NY after taxes and fees. What’s surprising is that once I started breaking down my bills carefully is that, just like, electric, the majority of my gas utility bill is for delivery – not supply.
Currently, 80% of my gas bill is paid for delivering gas to my home. I started this quest because my utility bills are skyrocketing, and I expected to find that things like the Russia-Ukraine war, pipeline construction, fracking laws, etc. are pushing my bills higher. What I didn’t expect to find is that the cost for delivery is what’s really driving my bills higher.
It turns out that the supply of gas is not going up at all, in fact, the cost of natural gas supply is lower than two years ago! Breaking down my delivery costs further I see another interesting trend.
What’s really driving up my gas delivery costs are taxes and fees. Gas supply costs are at two year lows, and taxes and fees for gas supply are negligible. The major fluctuation in my gas bill comes from taxes and fees in my gas delivery rate.
In a future post, I’m going to break down my gas bill further and look at each tax and fee in some detail. But not now!
