December saw some interesting changes in my ConEd bill. For the first time in a while, both my gas and electric utility rates fell!
I switched from Sustainable Westchester flat rate electricity to Constellation variable rate energy 3 months ago and saw a big benefit this month. For the first time in a while, the aggregate electric rate fell by 9%! My supply rate dropped 16% while the delivery rate fell 4%. Electric supply after taxes and all fees is $.10/KwH, electric delivery is $.22/KwH, and the combined rate is $.22/KwH here in White Plains, NY. As with most months, electricity delivery accounts for more than 2/3rds of my total electricity rate.
My gas rates had some interesting movements this month. The gas supply rate rose by 13% from 61c/therm in October to 70 c/therm in December. The gas delivery rate did some very strange things. Even though we are in winter, the delivery rate fell 32% from 2.58 cents/therm to $1.91 c/therm. Why? Primarily because of the ‘Delivery Adjustment Rate,’ which is set by the NY State regulators, fell 58%, from 41 c/therm to 16.91 c/therm. Overall, the combined gas rate fell 21% to $2.61 from $3.19 in October 2024
Considering that delivery rates are more than 2/3 of both gas and electricity rates – we need to think beyond drilling to lower our overall utility rates. We don’t hear ANY politicians with a plan to reduce delivery rates, let’s hope this picks up steam in 2024.
