The biggest changes in my December bill were in natural gas. Every winter we see big changes in natural gas supply prices, and this year we are seeing similar changes. However, ConEd finds a way to lower natural gas delivery charges, which was 71% of my gas bill in November.
The USA is pumping more natural gas and oil than ever for both domestic consumption and export. Our Liquified Natural Gas markets are booming since the Ukraine war and thankfully, we have enough natural capacity to meet domestic and export markets. Therefore, our gas supply rates aren’t skyrocketing. In December my gas supply, post taxes and fees increased $.17 to 71c/Therm, while gas delivery decreased $.45 to $1.76/therm. As a result, the total gas rate fell from $2.66/term to $2.47/therm, or about 7%.
One thing that I noticed that didn’t change too drastically is my gas usage in December over the past three years. Despite changes in household size, it seems that December weather hasn’t been drastically different over the past few years so my usage is within 5% variance each year. While I saw a huge rate increase in 2022, happy to see natural gas rates stabilizing in 2023, though still extremely high.
